iOS 8 is already causing Wi-Fi and battery drain issues

Just like with previous iOS releases, Apple’s recently rolled out iOS 8 update is causing issues for some device users, including Wi-Fi problems and faster battery drain, asCNET reports. This isn’t the first time a new iOS update has caused such problems, especially on older device that have been updated to the latest software version, and Apple is expected to release fixes for these issues in the near future.
iOS users are already talking on the company’s support forums about the Wi-Fi connectivity and speed issues, revealing that all sorts of devices are failing them following the iOS 8 update, including last year’s iPad Air, Retina iPad mini and iPhone 5s. Interestingly, even Apple’s brand new iPhone 6 models are affected by these issues, at least for some users.
One user has already contacted Apple support, with the company advising him to simply backup up the device and restore it as new.
“Chatted with Apple support and they had me do a restore and set up as new. I did that since I’m seeing other glitches in iOS 8,” user Morac wrote on the forum. “It seemed to work after that, but I only tested for a few minutes and didn’t do the ping test (which I should have done as that would have given me a definitive answer). I then restored my backup and the issues returned. Apple support implied if restoring as new didn’t fix the problem, then it’s a hardware problem. Considering the number of reports about this, he can’t be correct.”
The iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems thread already has more than 10,000 views and over 210 replies.
A forum thread discussing battery life on iOS 8 is also open on Apple’s support section, with some users revealing they’re experiencing poorer battery life following the iOS 8 update. The thread is smaller than the Wi-Fi one, having 35 replies and just over 1,200 views.
“My battery drains very fast (100% to zero in about 4 hours with minimal usage), started happening right after I upgraded to iOS 8. Issue started happening both on my iPhone 5S and on my iPad Air after iOS 8 upgrade,” user Raghuseeth1 said.
At the same time, other iOS 8 users say they have not experienced such problems on their devices.
Obviously, such Wi-Fi and battery issues can significantly impact the overall experience of the user. Apple is yet to mention any details about the problems. For what it’s worth, the company is supposed to release a major iOS 8 update in October, to enable certain features, such as Apple Pay, HealthKit apps and SMS continuity on Macs, at which point it will likely release bug fixes as well.
