Nokia Lumia 930 charged by potatoes and apples. Seriously…

If you were to casually ask if it was possible to charge a smartphone using only apples and potatoes, people might think you’d lost one or two of your marbles. However artist Caleb Charland has done exactly that, adding power to his Nokia Lumia 930 using nothing but fruit and vegetables.

Caleb Charland is an artist that specializes in creating visual pieces where a modern day electrical devices are powered by living, organic things. Microsoft challenged him to wirelessly charge his Nokia Lumia 930 using only natural objects as a power source. The outcome is pretty astounding.

For sure the end result is quite astounding, but it actually took quite a few apples and potatoes to create what amounts to the world’s largest battery – a giant organic battery. Caleb mounted dozens and dozens of apples and potatoes on spikes which were then bound together using copper wire. The organic battery ended up being eight feet high and twenty feet wide, using a total of 800 apples and potatoes. In the end however, did it indeed successfully power a wireless charging unit.

The idea that fruit and veg can power our devices is a somewhat odd notion, but of course it is all backed by solid science. Charland himself is influenced by British scientist and inventor Michael Faraday, the man responsible for pioneering the concept of electromagnetic induction. The potato and apple battery charger follows the same principles introduced by Faraday in the mid nineteenth century. It is currently on display at the Westfield shopping center in Shepherd’s Bush, London. Don’t forget to check out the video below:
