According to Apple, a number of iPhone handsets sold between September 2012 and January 2013 had issues regarding battery life and recharging. Apple will swap out the old batteries with new ones for free.
Apple said that the issue stretched only to a few handsets and take up a very small percentage of the phones sold during that time period.
Apple created a webpage allowing iPhone 5 users to find out if they have faulty batteries by submitting their handset's serial number.
The replacements are already running in the U.S. and China and will soon spread to other countries.
Apple cautioned that if the iPhone in question was damaged or broken in any way, it could affect the process of replacing the old cell. They advised that if this is the case, to get the damage phone repaired first.
On other news in relevance to iPhone batteries, sources say that the iPhone 6 will have a substantially better battery than the previous iPhone models.
The iPhone 6's new battery is about 33% stronger than the iPhone 5S's battery.
The current iPhone 5S has a capacity of 1560 mAh. The 4.7-inch model will have 2100 mAh while the 5.5-inch model will have 2915 mAh. That means that the two sizes will have a 35% and 85% improvement over the last models battery, respectively.
With the coming release of the iPhone 6, analysts believe that there will be massive sales for the incoming Apple phone.
"As well as they did with the iPhone this quarter, with all the rumors of a new iPhone this fall, I was impressed with the results," said Van Baker of Gartner said about Apple's second-quarter. "That tells me when the next generation comes out, they're going to set the world on fire."
On July 22, Apple reported the massive sale of 35.2 million iPhones in the second quarter; a whopping 13% increase from the same period the year before. A surprising outcome as sales tends to drop before the release of a new iPhone.
