Earlier this year Google officially unveiled Android Wear, the company’s new software platform for smartwatches and other wearable devices. Soon after the announcement LG and Motorola announced their first Android Wear-powered smartwatches, the G Watch and Moto 360, respectively. Since then, another Android Wear watch was launched, Samsung’s Gear Live.
Last week we’ve heard that another big company will soon join the Android Wear world. A report coming from Focus Taiwan revealed that ASUS’s CEO Jerry Shen told the investors tat the company will launch a smartwatch later this year at IFA Berlin. Well, it seems that the report was true after all, because ASUS post their first IFA teaser on Google +, telling us that “Time has been transformed, and we have changed.” Besides the obvious reference to time, the teaser also shows the outline of a smartwatch.
For the time being, the details about the yet-unannounced are almost zero. We’ve heard some reports that it will run Google’s Android Wear platform, but that’s all. Other sources are suggesting that the ASUS smartwatch will be priced more aggressively than its existing rivals. Furthermore, ASUS’ Shen said during an investor’s conference that the company’s upcoming watch “looks better than competitors’ products but comes with a relatively low price tag.”
Of course, he failed to mention how low the price tag will really be, but we can make a guess. The Gear Live is currently one the cheapest Android Wear smartwatch and it costs $199. So will the ASUS smartwatch have a price of $150 or less? Don’t be too surprised to hear so. If the reports prove true, then a smartwatch priced between $100 – $150 and that looks at least as good as the Gear Live or the G Watch would become very popular quickly. Would you be interested?
