Samsung continues to explain how hard it is to make an iPhone 6 ‘killer’

Galaxy Alpha Design Story

After explaining a few days ago how hard it is to make an iPhone 6 “killer” – the partially metallic Galaxy Alpha is considered Samsung’s response to the incoming 4.7-inch iPhone 6 – Samsung is back with more marketing nonsense in a second post on the company’s blog that further explains the way Samsung designed this new phone.
From the get-go, Samsung says that with the Galaxy Alpha, the company “has taken a new approach to smartphone design. “More specifically, the three distinctive design characteristics of the Galaxy Alpha are metal frame, curved corners, and the finish.”
Just like in the previous post, Samsung fails to mention the plastic on the phone’s back, but does use the word metal eight times in the post to drive the point home.
The company also takes the opportunity to point out that the Galaxy Alpha isn’t its first time designing metal phones, although fails to explain why none of its popular Android handsets that helped it corner the Android market came in metal versions, and says that “after exhaustive researching, the designers concluded that metal was their optimal choice.”
One more pressing question Samsung feels it desperately needs to answer is “Why did it Curve the Corners?”
“The silhouette and cutting of the Galaxy Alpha is said to represent a significant breakthrough in design of smartphones. For example, the curvature of the corner is carved smoothly at an exact angle to balance the straight lines on each side to give the premium look – smoother and more refined corners; it is rhythmical,” the company says.
The more “rhythmical” design choice is also related to the fact that round corners will better protect it against accidental drops, according to the post.
In fact, Samsung also adds that it’s “not how you start, it is how you Finish,” hinting at the plastic back of the phone, without telling the reader what the material is.
The company goes on to explain that the best way to reduce shock impact for a phone is not to drop it, which is why it decided to add a thin coating “around the common spot where people hold their phones.”
Plus, “metal tends to have a cold feeling,” which is how Samsung also explains the “calm matter finish” on the back.
