Over the past year, Samsung has announced a mind-numbing six different smartwatches that run on four different platforms and none of them so far have come close to being hits. This fact isn’t lost on Jeff Williams, who serves as Apple’s senior vice president for operations and who was chosen to be the project lead for the Apple Watch. In an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, Williams takes a dig at Samsung’s approach to flooding the market with gobs of different gadgets and hoping that one of them will manage to stick.
“One of our competitors is on their fourth or fifth attempt [at making a smartwatch], but nobody is wearing them,” Williams tells the publication.
Although he doesn’t mention Samsung by name, it’s pretty clear that’s whom he’s referring to since Samsung has been the only big-name company to release anywhere close to that many smartwatches so far.
Williams made these comments in response to a question of whether he feels Apple should have done more to make sure the Apple Watch released in time for the holiday shopping season. In the same article, Apple CEO Tim Cook backed up Williams’ take and said that “we could have done the watch much earlier, honestly, but not at the fit and finish and quality and integration of these products… and so we are willing to wait.”
