Without a doubt the Nexus 6 is one of the most anticipated smartphones of the second half of the year. We’ve heard a lot of Nexus 6 rumors over the past couple of weeks and now we get to hear more details about its technical specifications and design.
Early this year it was rumored that Google is planning a new program called Android Silver that will replace the Nexus family of devices. Soon after I/O 2014, a Google employee officially dismissed the rumors that said the Nexus line-up will be ditched, then reports of unannounced Nexus hardware started to surface online. First we’ve heard about an 8.9-inch Nexus tablet manufactured by HTC, then the rumor mill started talking about a Nexus smartphone manufactured by Motorola.
The latest Nexus 6 report surfaced online courtesy of Android Police. The publication even provided a mock-up of the Nexus 6, the smartphone looking a lot like a Moto X on steroids. That’s probably because the device will be manufactured by Motorola. Codenamed Shamu, the terminal has front-facing stereo speakers, while the power and volume keys are placed towards farther down on the sides for better ergonomics.
Early reports suggested that Motorola Shamu will have a 5.9-inch display, then it was reported that it will actually be a 5.2-inch screen. It seems that, after all, it will sport a 5.9-inch display with Quad HD (1440 x 2560) resolution. Well, at least that’s what the latest rumors seem to indicate.
As you can see in the photo above, there are some strange icons on the screen of the Nexus 6. Besides the revamped Dialer, Play Store, Gmail, and Play Music icons there’s also a strange new icon to the right of the phone dialer. That might be a “messaging” app, but we all know that since KitKat the messaging has been integrated into Hangouts. Who knows, maybe the Messaging app will return in Android L.
It seems that Nexus 6 will also be compatible with Motorola’s turbo charger. For those of you wondering, Motorola promises that their turbo charger gives Moto X 8 hours of usage after only 15 minutes of charging.
Hardware-wise, the Nexus 6 is expected to pack a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor paired with 3 GB of RAM and a 3,200 mAh battery. It could also arrive with a 13 MP primary camera with optical image stabilization and dual-LED flash, and a 2 MP user-facing camera. Without a doubt, the terminal will run Android 5.0 L out of the box.
With all these being said, it seems that this year’s Nexus smartphone will actually be a phablet, as there is no proof of Google readying a smaller Nexus phone. Is a 5.9-inch screen too big for you? Would you still buy the Nexus 6? Please let us know in comments.
