First impressions of Android One show a bright future for the program

One of Google’s most important announcements for all of 2014 has been the introduction of Android One. Android One is Google’s attempt at reaching the next billion consumers to go mobile. To do this, Google is choosing the hardware for Android One devices, taking care of the software and giving carriers just enough control to keep them pushing the devices. And it’s working out very well.

First impressions of Android One program devices are continuing to hit the Internet with nothing but praise for what amounts to a $100 smartphone. Of particular note is a great overview/quick review of Micromax Canvas A1 from Alex Dobie of Android Central. He says that, despite low-end specs like a lackluster camera, 4GB of internal storage (which is thankfully expandable), 4.5-inch FWVGA (854×480) IPS display, 1.3GHz quad-core processor and ARM Mali 400MP GPU, the device feels great. Very snappy and well worth the $100.

If Google can continue to exert control over Android One and build strong relationships with component manufacturers, there’s good reason to believe Android One will be the program to reach the next billion consumers to go mobile and then some. We’ll be keeping a close eye on Android One, and how it may end up eventually affecting the US
