Nexus 4 Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Officially Confirmed
Google has announced that the beloved Nexus 4 smartphone will get the Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade after all. That’s fantastic news for a device that was launched 21 months ago, an “old” smartphone according to some Android “enthusiasts” to be exact.
When the Android 5.0 announcement was made earlier today there was a type stating that the new OS upgrade will only be released for the Nexus 5, 7 and 10 devices, and that first it will be available on the newly presented Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 devices. However, shortly after that, Sascha Pruter made a Google+ poststating that the original title posted by Google had a typo in it, as they forgot to add the ‘4’.
The Android 5.0 Lollipop for Nexus 4 should arrive in the next few weeks at the same time as the update for Nexus 5, 7, and 10 models. There is no official date set for release, but we can expect the Nexus 4 to get Android L 5.0 before the end of next month.
The Nexus 4 still goes strong, it packs some decent hardware and since it runs the latest Android 4.4.4 KitKat smoothly, then there was no reason for Google not to push Android L for it. The only bad thing that I can find about the N4 device is that its battery life has gotten worse with each new OS release, but there is still hope that with the new OS update and with its new Batter Saver feature the Nexus 4 will get a major lifeline.
The ‘battery saver’ function added with Android 5.0 will extend the battery life by 90 minutes if we were to believe the Lollipop dedicated web page at Android.com. We will learn more about this new feature when the OS roll out will take place in the coming weeks.
Android 5.0 Lollipop adds tons of major changes. A new Material Design UI that’s way more responsive and smoother than the previous interfaces that Google has created. Notifications have been completely refreshed with Priority Mode and more other great features. Security features like Android Smart Lock, Device Sharing adds Guest users, multiple users per phones and screen pinning, better Quick Settings menu with tons of extra controls like hotspot, flashlight, screen rotation, cast screen, location.
With Android 5.0 Lollipop, the Google Nexus 4 device will also receive the final form of Android Runtime (ART), a new computing technology that should offer a smoother and faster Android experience, up to four times better performance when compared to the old Dalvik that was used on Android 4.x versions. Other small changes in Android 5.0 are as following: the OpenGL ES 3.1 graphics upgrade, lower latency audio input, multi-channel audio stream mixing, better camera software, support for more than 70 new languages, multiple new payment apps support for ‘Tap & Pay’ software, and others. Check the Android 5.0 Lollipop web page herefor more details and learn everything you can about the brand new OS from Google before it arrives on your device.
Keep in mind that all the Android updates are only pushed for Nexus 4 devices running 100% stock firmware. If you’re currently running a custom ROM on your device or in case you’ve applied any other major modification, then you will have to wait for Google to push out the Android 5.0 factory images before being able to install it. Return to our website in November and you should find enough info on how to install the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS on your Nexus 4.
