Best Android Apps of the Week: Solid Explorer, Feedly 25, AirDroid 3, and More

If you are a loyal reader, you may know already that in our Best Android Apps of the Week column you will be able to find both new apps and older apps that received noteworthy updates. It’s also worth noting that some of the apps may have in-app purchases, that some may be free, and that you might have to pay to be able to install some of them.

Solid Explorer 1.6.3 – Free / $1.99

Solid Explorer is a powerful file manager. The app has been now updated to version 1.6.3.

The new update brings the ability to write SD card contents on Android Lollipop and it improves the root handling on the same Android version. It also brings a fix for the misaligned splashscreen on high resolution displays.

Solid Exporer is a free app and it can be downloaded from Google Play Store here. You can also go for the Pro version which costs $1.99 and it can be grabbed from here.

YouTube – Free

You get Material Design and you get Material Design! Everybody gets Material Design! That’s how it probably feels to be a Google app these days.

After the Mountain View-based giant released Android 5.0 Lollipop, most of their apps got updated to obey the Material Design guidelines. YouTube is the latest of them which received a major interface update. Of course, it brings the usual Material Design stuff with the new side menu, dynamic status bar, and more.

The YouTube update is already being pushed to users. You can also check the app in Play Store here.

Feedly v25 – Free

Even though Feedly got a couple of visual makeovers in the past, for some reason, the team has kept that ugly Gingerbread-style settings menu. Well, the latest update comes to address that.

Besides bringing a new settings menu, Feedly 25 also comes with higher resolution images, and fewer crashes and freezes. You should also notice a new twitter sharing which no longer has feedly URL shortening.

BBC iPlayer – Free

If you live in the UK, you would probably be glad to here that BBC’s iPlayer has received an update. Is not as major as you might expect it to be, but it brings a few new neat features.

The new BBC iPlayer update brings support for offline caching for 30 days, which means that you will be able to watch and download programmes for 30 days after they’re on TV. It also allows users to change location in Settings to watch on demand regional programmes and it also brings bug fixes.

Sonos 5.2 – Free

Sonos 5.2 arrives with multi-account support. The new feature was made available for the first time in beta early last month, but now it’s available for everyone else, too.

The new Sonos update also brings PLAYBAR sound enhancements and search experience improvements. If your device is running Android 4.0 or latter, you will also be able to enjoy Sonos lock screen controls.

AirDroid 3 – Free

As you may know already, AirDroid is a pretty handy tool, which allows you to control your Android device from your PC. Last week, it got updated to version 3.0 which, according to the developers, is “the largest update since the first release.”

AirDroid 3 brings native Windows and Mac clients which have support for notifications mirroring, end-to-end encryption, AirMirror, and more. The Android app has received an interface makeover and, of course, many bug fixes have been fixed.

Google News and Weather 2.2 – Free

Another week another update for one of Google’s native Android apps. This time it’s their News and Weather app which got upgraded to version 2.2.

The Google News and Weather 2.2 update changes share icon to universal Android tree style, it adds search support, and a Dark Theme option. You will also get Material Design animations (hamburger flip, overflow waves, drop-down refresh spinner) and a new UI for the weather charts.
