HTC Desire 620 Dual-SIM Mid-Ranger
HTC finally managed to swing to profit this past quarter and that has probably been due to the streamlining efforts and the success of the One M8 smartphone. The HTC mid-range launches this year have also been quite impressive and are among the best mid-range smartphones in the market currently. Today HTC added another new member to its 2014 mid-range smartphone lineup in the new Desire 620. The new smartphone has been announced in Taiwan for now, but could be expected to arrive in other markets in the coming weeks. If not globally, it will most likely be launched in other Asian markets. The newly announced smartphone comes in two variants for the Taiwanese market – Desire 620 and Desire 620G.
The Desire 620 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 1.2GHz quad-core chipset while the Desire 620G comes with the Mediatek MTK MT6592 octa-core chipset clocked at 1.7GHz. The Qualcomm variant offers TDD LTE connectivity whereas the Desire 620G makes do with 3G WCDMA connectivity. Both variants come with a 5-inch 1280 x 720 HD display, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal storage with microSD card slot for expansion, 8MP rear camera with 1080p video recording and HTC Eye experience camera software, 5MP front-facing camera, and a decent sized 2100mAh battery Both variants of the smartphone are going on sale in Taiwan from December. The Qualcomm Snapdragon variant has been priced at TWD 6990 ($225) while the Mediatek variant has been priced lower at TWD 4990 ($161). The Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 is the superior chip clearly, and also supports 64-bit architecture. It is in fact one of the first low-end chipsets from Qualcomm or any other major mobile chipset maker to come with 64-bit support and integrated LTE Cat.4 connectivity. Come next year, we should see most entry-level to lower mid-range smartphones come with this chipset at lower prices than what current devices with the chip are retailing for in various markets.
Overall the device does seem to be pretty decent value of money considering the hardware on offer, but it does seem like an unwanted device as HTC has a lot of options in the mid-range segment already, with very similar feature set. The new software features like the HTC Eye experience can be pushed out via software updates, while hardware wise the Desire 620 doesn’t offer anything vastly different from existing options from the company in a similar price bracket.
What are your thoughts on the new HTC Desire 620 and 620G? Do you want HTC to launch this new mid-ranger in your country?
