OnePlus One ‘Mini’ Variant With 5.0″ Display Leaks In China With Mid-Range Specs
The OnePlus One is one of the more interesting smartphones to have released this year. The company’s first smartphone has managed to stay in the limelight despite its limited availability and the infamous ‘invites system’. The smartphone offers flagship grade hardware for a much lower price than flagship devices from leading Android OEMs out there. OnePlus has done a good job with the smartphone overall, but the physical dimensions of the device aren’t really as impressive as they could have been. It looks like the company is looking at introducing a “Mini” variant of the One to appeal to those who are not too comfortable with a 5.5-inch device. Gizmochina has published photos of a purported OnePlus One Mini that is expected to be announced soon.
The device is expected to come with a 5-inch display (resolution is not known yet), Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chip, Dual-8MP cameras and run on Android 4.4.4 KitKat. The design of the One Mini seems to be very similar to the OnePlus and it will come with the same color options as well. The device is rumored to be priced quite aggressively at 1499 RMB ($242) in the Chinese market. The pricing for markets such as US might be a little different.
The OnePlus One Mini release date is unknown but since we’ve almost reached the end of the year, it doesn’t look like One Plus Mini will be releasing this year. That will make the OnePlus One Mini part of OnePlus’s 2015 lineup. The successor to the OnePlus One should also be unveiled next year, with current rumors pointing to a release sometime in July. What also remains to be seen is if the company will finally abandon its ‘invites system’ to sell devices. The invites system for the OnePlus One has been one of the biggest complaint most people have had. The company had made a claim earlier this year that it was going to put an end to the invite system later this year but unfortunately that hasn’t happened yet. What OnePlus did do, is to remove the invites system for the holiday season so people could buy the OnePlus One for themselves or their loved ones this holiday season. Unfortunately this was also for a limited period.
Eventually we believe OnePlus does realize that it cannot survive unless it makes its devices accessible to the masses. If OnePlus is indeed serious about the smartphone market and wants to continue to have a presence, it will need to sell its devices like the other OEMs do and tie up with the US carriers in order to penetrate the US smartphone market.
