Google Maps for iOS updated with support for turn-by-turn navigation in offline mode
Google updated its Maps for Android app last month with the ability to use download area maps for offline use and turn-by-turn navigation. Now, the iOS counterpart has also been updated with the same features. With offline maps support, iOS users can now select a portion of the map and save them locally on an iPad or an iPhone. The app does more than saving the street layout. With offline maps, users can look for nearby destinations without a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.
Users can also get information about nearby restaurants and pubs, contact details and business hours. Turn-by-turn navigation feature is also present and it can now be used in offline mode.
However, mass transit directions such as train or subway routes, biking and walking directions are still missing in the offline mode. When you download offline maps, it may take anywhere between 150MB to 450MB of storage space on your iPhone or iPad.
Similar to the Android version, the offline maps are valid for 30 days and to use after that, you’ll have to update the files. In case you forget to update or manually delete the offline maps, they will expire automatically and get deleted from your device. This way, you won’t get stuck with the wasted space that you may otherwise forget.
Besides the above features and bug fixes, Google Maps will also show up-to-date gas prices. However, this feature is only available in the US and Canada. For those unaware, Google Maps app is also available for Apple Watch.
