Nexus 6P users experiencing battery failure issue after Android 7.0 Nougat update

Google recently released Android 7.0 Nougat update for its Nexus-line — the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. The update brings a lot of new features multi-window support, improved notifications pane with inline replies, tweaks to doze mode, data saver and more. Besides new features, the update also brings some bugs that have been annoying some Nexus 6P users. There is a strange battery issue which causes the smartphone to freeze and randomly shuts down. To power it back on, one has to plug it into a power source.
While it appears to be a software related bug that is causing the problem, neither Google nor Huawei has acknowledged the same. A Reddit user going by user name Redytedy has started a thread where multiple users have confirmed the issue. Redytedy has also shared a video on YouTube demonstrating the battery issue on his Nexus 6P that is running on Android 7.0 Nougat update. The two-minute video shows the Nexus 6P having roughly 53 percent battery and after clicking three photos using the camera app, the phone shuts down on its own. While the Nexus 6P doesn’t turn on using the power button, he has to plug in the charging cable and then press power button to make it boot.
A user going by name Cewkie posted on the Reddit thread saying “Got a call while listening to music. Answered the call. Battery saver kicked off, phone starting shutting off. Plugged it in, hoping to save it. When I plugged it in, I saw the battery read 0%.”

Another user (Vanterax) says, “Noticed the same thing last week where the battery dropped from 96% to 73% in just a few seconds. The phone was telling that I had 3 mins of battery left. And it was dropping by the second. I rebooted the phone and the battery showed 98% and remained steady. Seems like something internal crashed and wasn’t tracking the battery properly.”
I also spoke to a friend (Aashish Jeph) who owns a Nexus 6P and he’s also facing the same issue. “The phone randomly hangs and shuts down. And after I restart the notification bar shows a lot of unnecessary icons,” he said.
Most times, such problems are often due to buggy apps hogging most battery. But from what most people are reporting, the Nexus 6P problem seems to do with the system-wide bug-ridden Android 7.0 Nougat update. While a factory reset solves such issues most of the times, it is not the same this time around. A lot of people on Reddit have reported of trying it, but no luck.
However, there are some users that claim to have the problem solved after Android 7.1 Developer Preview upgrade. “Try upgrading to 7.1.1 and then factory reset. Fixed my problems,” Reddit user The-Respawner wrote. While Google may still be weeks away from officially releasing the Android 7.1 update, you can head over to android.com/beta, and sign up for the Developer Preview program. Google has also made the OTA images available for those who would like to manually flash them. You can find more instructions to update on our post here.
