FiftyThree's Pencil Will Have a Huge Upgrade When iOS 8 Is Released This Fall

Last year FiftyThree came out with a stylus appropriately named Pencil to accompany its popular iPad app Paper.

It's far from those things that came with PalmPiolets in the late 1990s. Pencil was designed to look and function like an old-fashioned pencil and when iOS 8 rolls out this fall, it will be even closer to one.

Zac Hall at 9to5mac noticed the announcement on FiftyThree's blog earlier today.

Pencil already has a lot of cool features. Paper can sense which side of Pencil you're using — the tip to create and the other to erase. The Palm Rejection senses when you're using it and won't allow your hand to alter other ares of the iPad canvass. It also functions with all of the tools within paper, not just Sketch or Write.

But arguably the most impressive will be the Surface Pressure feature coming this fall.

The update with iOS 8 will make Pencil "expressive from every angle" and capable of making lines of all shapes and sizes without having to change any settings.

FiftyThree has worked to bring the seamless versatility of traditional paper and utensils to the iPad and Surface Pressure is a landmark achievement in that sense. It will bring an unparalleled level of manipulation to users.

Pencil connects to the iPad 3 and later generations of the tablet, as well as the iPad mini. It uses Bluetooth to connect to them and charges in a USB port. The battery lasts one month with normal usage.

Paper is free to download at the App Store and has in-app purchases available. Pencil costs $59 to $74 dollars, depending on the material.
