Samsung Galaxy Alpha Announced: Premium Design, 4.7-inch Screen, and Only 6.7 mm Thin

It was rumored in over the past couple of months that Samsung is on the verge of releasing a new smartphone with premium design. The rumors were confirmed today, after the South Korea-based phone maker officially introduced the Samsung Galaxy Alpha.

Most of the technical specifications of the Galaxy Alpha were revealed by successive leaks over the past couple of weeks and most of the reports have been confirmed. Therefore, you won’t be to surprised by the smartphone’s hardware if you are up to date with the latest reports. However, there are a couple of details we haven’t seen in reports.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha is 132.4 mm tall, 65.5 mm wide, and only 6.7 mm thin, being the thinnest Galaxy smartphone ever. Galaxy Alpha is also light weighing in at 115 grams. Connectivity-wise the handset arrives with WiFi: 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, microUSB 2.0, NFC, and LTE-A. Just like the Galaxy S5 it sports a fingerprint sensor and a heart rate monitor.

The iPhone 6 rival packs a 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display with 1280 x 720, while being underpinned by an Exynos 5430 Octa chipset with quad-core 1.8 GHz CPU + quad-core 1.3 GHz CPU, paired with 2 GB of RAM. It has 32 GB of non-expandable storage, 12 MP primary cam, 2.1 MP secondary shooter, and a 1,860 mAh battery. It runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box with TouchWiz UI on top of it.

Anyway, the main selling point of the new Samsung Galaxy Alpha will be the design. The device has a metal frame around its edges, while the rear cover (which is removable) has a dimpled texture that is somewhat similar to the one of the Galaxy S5. The South Korean company announced that the new handset will be available in five color options: Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver, and Scuba Blue, of course, market dependent. The most impressive design feature of the Galaxy Alpha is the profile, being one of the thinnest smartphones currently on the market.

Even though it was initially rumored that Alpha will be a limited edition smartphone, Samsung announced the device will become available for purchase in 150 markets starting early September. There’s no doubt that the premium handset will also hit the US, but the price and availability weren’t revealed yet.
