The announcement of Android Wear, Google’s software platform for smartwatches and wearable devices, made the big players of the smartphone market release their own smartwatches underpinned by the new operating system. The summer brought us the LG G Watch and the Samsung Gear Live, Motorola’s Moto 360 will debut on the market by the end of the month. Sony’s latest smartwatch was released almost a year ago, but now we hear that the Japanese company is on the verge of releasing a successor.
According to Japanese website Digi-Wo, Sony’s Smartwatch 3 will see the light of day in September at IFA Berlin 2014. The said publication also reports about some of the features of the new Sony smartwatch. If their claims are to be believed, the screen resolution will be upgraded, while the panel will use the the same translefective technology as SmartWatch 2. In case you don’t know it already, the translefective screens are said to be more battery friendly and to have better visibility under direct sunlight. It seems though that, for some reason, Sony will not use Android Wear for Smartwatch 3, as they decided to equip the device with their own operating system instead.
The same source also indicates that Sony SmartWatch 3 will have a built-in WiFi antenna, therefore it won’t be necessary to pair it with a smartphone. The device will apparently have support for wireless charging while being both water and dust resistant.
