Samsung managed to beat Apple to the punch by unveiling its flagship phablet for 2014 before Apple made its new iPhone 6 Plus official, but unfortunately announcing a phone and launching a phone are two very different things. Android fans know exactly what they have to look forward to when the Galaxy Note 4 finally hits store shelves, but they won’t be able to get one in their hands until nearly a month from now;Samsung announced on Thursday that it will begin taking preorders for the new Galaxy Note 4 on Friday, September 19th — which also just happens to be iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launch day — ahead of an October 17th release.
The Galaxy Note 4’s specs are highlighted by a 5.7-inch quad HD Super AMOLED display, a 2.7GHz quad-core processor, 3GB of RAM, a 16-megapixel camera and the latest available version of Android KitKat. As we noted in our hands-on preview of the Note 4, the display is absolutely gorgeous and then phone is plenty powerful.
Of course, it doesn’t quite have the sex appeal of the iPhone 6 Plus though, and we can see some people deciding to skip the Note 4 in favor of the 6 Plus now that we know there’s almost a month left before it starts shipping. Then again, severe supply constraints could mean that the iPhone 6 Plus will take just as long or even longer to obtain for many users, so it might be a wash.
Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 4 will launch on all four major wireless carriers in the U.S., and pricing will be announced by individual carriers.
