Android Platform Stats Reveal Big Growth For KitKat
Google has released latest Android platform statistics for September and not so surprisingly we see Android 4.4 KitKat take a big lead this month to almost reach the No.1 spot. According to the latest stats, KitKat has a 24.5% share for the month, just behind Jellybean 4.1 at 25.1%. But going by the pace at which KitKat is moving up, we are pretty sure that by next month it would take the leading position.
Android KitKat’s share has been rising steadily in the past 3 months. It had a 20.9% share last month, and 17.9% the month before it. At the third position is Jellybean 4.2 with 20.7%. Android 2.3 still remains strong for such an old version, with 11.4% share.Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich isn’t very popular anymore, and now has only 9.6% share. Android 4.3 is the least popular Jellybean version with 8.0% share and the now ancient Android 2.2 Froyo is on 0.7% of Android devices. All other Android versions now have less than 0.1% share. The data was collected during a 7-day period from September 3rd to September 9th.
These stats show that Google’s endeavors to encourage the use of the latest Android version have been bearing fruit, and for the first time we’re seeing the latest Android version take the leading position in a short period of time. With new Android One devices coming in with the latest Android 4.4 soon, the number should rise even further in the near future.
With Android L just around the corner, KitKat might lose steam in the coming months though. Whether or not Android L will see rapid rise to the top in the coming months will be interesting to see. Over the past year, OEMs have become much more active than earlier in updating their devices to the latest version. We hope this trend continues on to the coming year and even low and mid-range offerings get similar treatment from the various Android OEMs.
