Moto X Officially Announced: 5.2-inch FHD Screen
Motorola have officially introduced their flagship smartphone for 2014. It’s called Moto X. Not X+1, not X2, or whatever the rumor mill called it over the past few months. The new Moto X builds on the success of its predecessor, bringing the same recipe: mid-to-high-end specs, highly customizable design, and a lower price point compared to its direct competitors.
Even though many were concerned about the design of the new Moto X after the first pictures leaked online, the handset looks a lot better in the press photos issued by Motorola (gallery below). The design of the new Moto X is customizable through the Moto Maker tool and Motorola confirmed that leather backs will join the already existing plastic and wood options.
Hardware wise, the new Moto X sports a quad-core 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 801 processor with Adreno 330 GPU, paired with 2 GB of RAM. The smartphone also arrives with a 5.2-inch OLED display with 1080 x 1920 resolution, 423 ppi pixel density, and Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The standard Moto X has 16 GB of storage, but you will be able to add 16 more through Moto Maker. On the back of the smartphone there’s a 13 MP main camera with F2.25 aperture and, even though Motorola didn’t mentioned anything about it, with support for 4K video recording. The front panel accommodates a 2 MP sensor capable of recording Full HD videos.
The connectivity features of the Moto X include WiFi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, microUSB, and 3.5 mm audio jack. The smartphone is kept alive by a 2,300 mAh battery. It measures 140.8 x 72.4 x 9.97 mm and has a weight of 144 grams.
The new Motorola flagship runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box that brings an almost-stock Android experience. It seems though that Active Display has received more options and that you will be able to silence calls by waving at the phone. Motorola Assist is also pre-loaded on the Moto X.
Even though Motorola failed to announce the exact release date of the new Moto X, they did mention that it will hit the market “later this month.” The new handset will come at $99 on-contract or $499 without.
