Samsung takes a lot of knocks for being a “fast follower” in the tech world but the company really is much more innovative than many give it credit for. Case in point:Samsung this week announced the development of a new 60GHz Wi-Fi technology that will allow for peak download speeds of up to 4.6Gbps, an five-fold increase from the current top speeds of 866Mbps.
“Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology, and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology,” explained Kim Chang Yong, the head of the DMC R&D Center of Samsung Electronics. “New and innovative changes await Samsung’s next-generation devices, while new possibilities have been opened up for the future development of Wi-Fi technology.”
The best news about this announcement is that because the 60GHz spectrum band is unlicensed everywhere in the world, Samsung can begin commercial deployment of this amazing technology as soon as next year. Of course, it goes without saying that your Wi-Fi is also only as good as your home Internet connection and having 4.6Gbps Wi-Fi won’t do you much good if you’re stuck using a 25Mbps Comcast home Internet connection. But for lucky duckies who have, say, Google Fiber or a similar service, we imagine that the new 60GHz Wi-Fi technology will be very welcome.
