Best Android Apps of the Week: WeMail, MX Player, Telegram 2.0, and More
It’s Monday today and we are ready to bring you another edition of our Best Android Apps of the Week column. As usual, we went through the apps that were released in Play Store since last Monday and we are listing the best ones below.
You may know from our previous Best Android Apps of the Week posts that here you will be able to find both new apps and older apps that received noteworthy updates. You should also know that some of the apps by be free others may be payed apps or might have in-app purchases.
MX Player – Free / $5.99
The Nexus devices and a couple of Motorola smartphones are already running Android 5.0 Lollipop and more devices will get the update in the next few weeks. If you relayed on MX Player to play your videos, you probably noticed already that it wouldn’t work on your Lollipop device.
Now the team of developers behind MX Player released a new version which makes their player ready for Android 5.0 Lollipop. The update doesn’t bring any Material Design polishes or something specific to Lollipop. The app looks and feels the same, but it now supports devices running Lollipop.
MX Player is free and it can be downloaded from Play Store here. The ad-free version costs $5.99 and it can be downloaded from here.
QuickPic 3.9 – Free
Android 5.0 Lollipop is a thing now, as the new software update is running on a handful of smartphones and tablets . As you may know already, Lollipop introduces a new design philosophy called Material Design and many developers have already adopted it for their apps.
The QuickPic 3.9 update brings a cleaner, Material Design UI for the app. Besides that it enables single thumbnail view as default while “stack” is an option, you can long press a folder to change its cover, and you will be able to optimize Picasa and Flickr albums structure. It also arrives with a fix for the ‘edit hidden picture failed’ error.
QuickPic is a free app. You can grab it from Google Play Store here.
YouTube 5.18 – Free
Google updated most of their Android apps over the past few weeks with Material Design makeovers. Last week, YouTube got updated to version 5.18.5.
The new YouTube update is not about bringing the app in-line with the Material Design guidelines. It’s about bringing back support for 1440p video playback. The Quad HD smartphones are now mainstream, so the owners will now be able to enjoy 1440p videos on their devices.
The YouTube 5.18.5 update is already being pushed to users and you can check the app in Play Store here. If the update wasn’t pushed to your device yet, you can download the APK here.
SwiftKey – Free
In my opinion SwiftKey is the best Android keyboard currently available. In fact it’s my go-to keyboard for a long time. Anyway, over the past couple of weeks, it had some performance issues.
The latest SwiftKey update arrives to address all the performance issues and make the keyboard even faster. According to the SwiftKey team, after the new update it opens 15 – 20% faster, closes 20 – 30% faster, and is 10 – 18% more responsive. The new update also brings support for 12 new languages.
SwiftKey is free. You can download it from Play Store at this link.
Unified Remote 3.1 – Free / $3.99
The Unified Remote app can be used to control your PC from afar. Last week, it has received Lollipop treatment.
Unified Remote 3.1 brings Material Design aesthetics, including a new site panel that pulls on top of the action bar. Of course, the new update also arrives with various bug fixes and performance improvements.
Unified Remote is a free app and it can be downloaded from Play Storehere. Anyway, if you want full functionality you will have to pay $3.99for it.
Telegram 2.0 – Free
According to the team behind it, Telegram is a messaging app focused on speed and security. Telegram got updated to version 2.0 over the past week.
As you might have guessed already Telegram 2.0 brings Material Design interface elements. It also allows the uses to determine who can see your Last Seen time, set a period of inactivity after your account will self-destruct, and the ability to cloud search for messages.
Telegram is a free app and it’s available in Google Play Store. Here’s the download link.
Nova Launcher Beta 3.3 – Free
As you may know, Android 5.0 Lollipop also brought enhancements to the Google Now Launcher. Because Nova Launcher wants to emulate the aesthetics of the stock Android launcher the next update will bring Lollipop-style Launcher cards.
The Lollipop style drawer is already available in Nova Launcher Beta 3.3 (you can enable it from Settings > Drawer > Show Pages as Cards). The new update also renames the Circle animation as Circle Wipe and adds Lollipop style Circle animation.
Nova Launcher Beta is available for free. You can download it form Play Store here.
Reddit Sync 10 – Free / $2.49
About a year ago I switched from Reddit News to Reddit Sync and never looked back. Now, Reddit Sync has hit version 10 and a new interface came along.
The new Reddit Sync update brings some of the Material Design aesthetics to the app. It doesn’t depart too much from Reddit Sync’s previous interface, but the change is pretty big.
Reddit Sync is available for download in Play Store for free. Anyway, we are recommending you to purchase the Reddit Sync Pro for $2.49 to get rid of the adds and support the developers.
WeMail – Free
There are quite a few email clients available for download in Google Play Store. Some would treat your mails as tasks, others would group them by type.
WeMail promises to handle your email from Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, and AOL, and group all of them by sender. You will also get a dedicated section where images and document attachments are sorted by sender. You also get the option to replay to emails with a voice note up to 20 seconds.
WeMail is free. You can check it in Google Play Store here.
