Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Exynos Variant Found 

Last month a Galaxy Note 4 teardown revealed that the phablet was using a Sony IMX240 camera sensor. Until then it was believed that the Galaxy Note 4 was also using a Samsung ISOCELL camera like the Galaxy S5. But it turns out that the IMX240 Sony sensor is only used on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 variants of the Note 4. Phonearena decided to do some digging in the hidden menu of the device to find out technical information on the device’s rear camera. On the Snapdragon 805 variant the camera information shows the rear camera as Sony IMX240 while on the Exynos variant it shows “SLSI_S5K2P2_FIMC_IS”,

The result is actually similar to what is displayed under the Camera details on the Galaxy S5 as well. This is definitely quite interesting as it looks like Samsung is using both its own ISOCELL sensor and the Sony Exmor RS sensor in the Note 4. So far no reports have come out claiming one variant has a superior camera to the other, so maybe Samsung managed to fine tune both sensors to deliver equal results. It isn’t the first time that Samsung has used two different camera sensors on its flagship smartphone. Samsung has used its own sensors in addition to the Sony Exmor CMOS sensors on smartphones like the Galaxy S2. Such a decision was taken most likely due to a shortage of the Samsung ISOCELL or perhaps the Sony Exmor RS sensor. And since Samsung couldn’t afford to have lower than expected shipments of the Galaxy Note 4 in the market, they had to use two different camera sensors.

Regardless of what camera sensor difference, the Galaxy Note 4 is one of the most capable cameraphones in the market currently and delivers excellent results in bright conditions. Low-light imaging performance is also improved over the Galaxy S5, which was already pretty decent. The new Optical Image Stabilization helps as well and the video performance, especially in 4K resolution, is among the best in the market.
