Best Android Apps of the Week: Root Checker, TuneIn Radio, and More

I am sure that our loyal readers know what to expect from the Best Android Apps of the Week column, but if you landed here for the first time hear that in this post you will be able to find the most noteworthy apps released in Google Play Store in a week’s time. Some of them may be new apps, some may be older apps that received important updates. Some may be free, some may be payed apps, and other may have in-app purchase, so make sure you read their Google Play description when installing.

Root Checker – Free

Root Checker is a simple tool, very popular among Android users who gained root access to their devices. It does just what its name suggests: checks whether your Android device is rooted or not.

Root Checker has received a deserved update that brings a visual makeover. Even though the new interface is not Material Design-inspired, it definitely makes the app look a lot more modern. Anyway, it looks like the team behind Root Checker is planning to bring further design improvements to their app.

Root Checker is free and it can be downloaded from Google Play Storehere. You can also buy an ad-free version via an in-app purchase.

Root Explorer 3.3 – $3.99

Root Explorer is a great file manager that would help you easily navigate through your folders. It works without root, too, but then you won’t be able to modify the /system partition of your Android device.

Last week, Root Explorer reached version 3.3. The update isn’t about bringing Material Design UI, but about adding SD card write capability without root for Android 5.0 Lollipop devices. Neat, huh?

SuperSU 2.35 – Free

SuperSU has received a noteworthy update last week, an update that brings it to version 2.35. You probably heard that SuperSU had some troubles handling certain root apps after the Android 5.0 Lollipop because of the new SELinux security policies.

The SuperSU 2.3 update fixes many of the previous app compatibility issues. Furthermore, the new update also brings a couple of visual enhancements and a new icon for the app.

Duolingo – Free

Duolingo is a pretty popular app among the Android users who want to learn new languages. Your beloved teacher is now better-looking after the new update.

The new update aims to bring a couple of Material Design-esque changes to Duolingo, but, to be honest, it looks like it’s unfinished. Anyway, the visual improvements are obvious and I am sure that a future update will smoothen things up.

Time Warner Cable TV – Free

Time Warner Cable has received a new update. Even though is not as big as you would except, it finally allows the app to run on Android 5.0 Lollipop-powered devices.

Besides the much-needed Android 5.0 Lollipop fix, the TWC TV app also brings a fix for the random player lockups on Android 4.0.3 and 4.0.4. It also fixes some bugs that were affecting Intel x86 devices running Android 4.4.

TuneIn Radio – Free

Because Android 5.0 Lollipop is a thing now, many developers are working around the clock to update their apps to obey the Material Design guidelines. The latest TuneIn Radio update does just that and a bit more.

Besides a Material Design-inspired interface and a Material Design-specific slide out menu, the new update also introduces the much-awaited Google Chromecast support. You should also notice lock scree enhancements, alarm improvements, Android TV support, and some bug fixes.

TuneIn Radio is a free app and you can download it from Google Play Store using this link. There’s also a Pro version that is available for purchase at $9.99.
