It’s Official! Vivo X5 Max Is The New Thinnest Smartphone In The World
After weeks of teasers and rumors, Vivo’s latest Android smartphone is finallyofficial. And it is especially impressive because it now holds the title of the world’s slimmest smartphone with a maximum thickness of just 4.75mm. But it isn’t just a slim phone with emphasis on design alone, it is also a very impressive smartphone and comes with a lot of great features and respectable hardware specs.
The Vivo X5 Max has a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 Super AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core chipset with 64-bit support, 2GB RAM, 16GB ROM with a microSD card slot, 4G LTE connectivity, 13MP rear camera that uses the Sony IMX214 Exmor RS sensor, 5MP front-facing camera, dual-SIM card slots (one micro-SIM and one Nano-SIM), YAMAHA YSS-205X Karaoke chip, Hi-Fi 2.0 and runs on Android 4.4.4 KitKat based Funtouch OS 2.0.
As you can imagine, Vivo didn’t find it easy to pull of this massive engineering feat. Vivo has to make a custom motherboard for the X5 Max that is 1.7mm thin. The phone’s chassis is also the thinnest smartphone chassis around at just 3.98mm. Finally, the display they use is a special panel with a thickness of only 1.36mm. If you’re wondering why Vivo went with a Super AMOLED display, that is because Super AMOLED panels are significantly thinner than their LCD counterparts as there is no requirement for an additional backlight module. If Vivo had gone with an IPS LCD panel, the X5 Max would have ended up being 5+mm thin at best.
The Vivo X5 Max is going on sale in China on December 22 at a price of 2999 RMB (around $485). Vivo hasn’t mentioned anything about availability in other markets, but it is reportedly coming to the Indian market on December 15th. So instead of China, the first market where to device will go on sale is going to be India. Pricing information about the Indian market isn’t known yet, but expect to find more information on the 15th when the phone gets launched officially in the Indian market. The Vivo X5 Max will also mark the debut of the Chinese brand in India. A number of major Chinese Android OEMs have entered the Indian market over the past one year, and now Vivo seems to want a slice of the Indian smartphone market as well.
