After Google’s Android Silver project made the headlines, many have believed that the Mountain View-based giant is planning to kill the Nexus program. After a Google representative dismissed the rumors saying the Nexus family will be ditched, we’ve seen reports of an HTC-made new Nexus tablet. Now the rumor mill talks about a Nexus 6 smartphone, codenamed Shamu and packing a 5.9-inch display.
Even though the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5 had 4.7 and 5-inch screens, respectively, few have though that the Nexus 6 would actually sport a 6-inch display. If the rumors prove true, then the next-gen Nexus smartphone will be a 5.9-inch device manufactured by Motorola.
The folks at Android Police obtained this piece of information from an unnamed source familiar with the project. What we know so far about the Nexus 6 is that it’s codenamed Shamu – checks with the sea animals-related naming scheme for Nexus devices – that it has a 5.9-inch and that it integrates a fingerprint scanner. The aforementioned source also claims that the Nexus 6 release date has been set for November.
If the reports turn out accurate, this fall will bring as a couple of awesome Nexus devices: the 64-bit enabled 8.9-inch Nexus 9 tablet (codenamed HTC Volantis) and this alleged Motorola Nexus 6 smartphone with a 5.9-inch screen. We have no doubt that both devices will come pre-loaded with Google’s latest and greatest Android version, currently known as Android L.
Furthermore, a curious guy managed to find the codename of the new Nexus 6 in the Google issues tracker. If you clicked this link you would be able to see an SSL protocol error that refers to a device with build number “aosp_shamu-userdebug…”
Unfortunately, there is no way to verify the veracity of the report, therefore we are advising you to take it with a pinch of salt. Anyway, if the Nexus 6 Shamu is real, we are pretty sure more evidence of it will surface online before its release date.
Would you be tempted to purchase a 5.9-inch Nexus smartphone? Is it too big, or you were waiting for a Nexus phablet for a long time? The comments section is all yours.
