The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is now officially official and most of the rumors that made the headlines over the past few weeks were confirmed today. The new device is exactly how the rumor mill speculated: a 4.7-inch smartphone with premium construction that aims at Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6.
The South Korea-based phone maker officially revealed that their new smartphone will be available in five different colors at launch: Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver, and Scuba Blue. Anyway, the availability of the colors is market dependent.
Even though it was initially reported that the Galaxy Alpha will be a limited edition device, Samsung announced that their new smartphone will be available for purchase on 150 markets. The Galaxy Alpha release date has been set for early September, just in time for the launch of the new iPhone 6.
Samsung also revealed that the recommended retail price of the Galaxy Alpha is €599, which makes the new smartphone almost as expensive as the Galaxy S5 and Note 4. Anyway, the US carriers will probably offer the new device with an on-contract price between $100 – 200.
Hardware-wise, the Galaxy Alpha is rather a mid-range smartphone. It arrives with a 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display with 1280 x 720 resolution, octo-core Exynos 5430 processor, 12 MP primary shooter, 2.1 MP secondary camera, 32 GB of non-expandable storage, and Android 4.4.4 KitKat. It also features a fingerprint sensor, a heart rate monitor, and all the connectivity features worthy of a modern smartphone including LTE, WiFi, BT 4.0 LTE, NFC, and microUSB 2.0.
In terms of design, the Galaxy Alpha is the most premium handset in the company’s line-up. It has a metal frame around the edges, a dimpled rear cover that’s a variation of the one that equips the Galaxy S5, is only 6.7 mm thin and weighs 115 grams. Are you buying?
