Motorola Begins Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA Rollout For 1st Gen Moto G
After starting the Android 5.0 Lollipop soak test for customers in India barely a few days back, Motorola has begun its Android 5.0 rollout for 1st Gen Moto G owners in India. The Moto G has been very successful in the Indian market, so it doesn’t come as a major surprise that Motorola decided to begin the Lollipop update for the handset from India. The update is being seeded to the Moto G XT1033 model, which is the dual-SIM variant sold in the Indian market. The 355MB OTA update carries the build number is 220.21.16.en.03. So far only those who registered for the soak test have received the OTA update, rollout for all users is expected to begin from Monday. If some major bug is found until then, the update for the masses might be delayed slightly, but the chances of that happening are very slim indeed.
The Android 5.0 Lollipop for Moto G brings several new features like the new Material Design UI, Notifications UI & Priorities, New Interruptions & Downtime settings, redesigned Recent Apps overview space, Ambient Display, Motorola Assist and Downtime, new Flashlight option under Quick Settings toggles, Guest user accounts, Screen pinning, new battery saver mode and optimizations to the battery life, smarter internet connections, Smart Lock with trusted devices, and improved performance thanks to the use of Android ART runtime.
While globally the 2nd Gen Moto G was the first Motorola smartphone to receive the Android 5.0 update, owners of the 2nd Gen Moto G in India are still waiting to receive the Android Lollipop update. It is expected that the Lollipop update for the 2nd gen model will also be rolled out over the next few days, along with the general rollout of the 5.0 update for 1st Gen Moto G owners.
With the Moto G and Moto X family of devices receiving Android 5.0 update, the only other globally available Motorola smartphone left to be updated to the latest Android version is their budget offering the Moto E. We believe Motorola will now focus on the Moto E Android Lollipop update next, as the Moto X and Moto G line update has been completed. While major Android OEMs are yet to update their flagship smartphones to Android 5.0, Motorola is almost done updating its mid-range and flagship smartphones and will most likely roll out the Lollipop update for its budget smartphone soon. So far none of the major OEMs have come out with Lollipop update plans for their entry-level and mid-range smartphones, that really highlights Motorola’s great push for bringing the latest Android version to all its customers regardless of the class of the device they own. Hopefully the other Android OEMs will take notice and start paying more attention to their mid-range and entry-level offerings when it comes to delivering timely software updates.
