Samsung’s Entry-Level Galaxy Core Prime Goes On Sale In India
Samsung’s Android market share may be on the decline, but the company hasn’t stopped believing in its philosophy of flooding the market with Galaxy devices at every price point. It is quite rare for a month to go by without the news of at least two or three new Galaxy smartphones being launched by the South Korean electronics giant. The latest member of the ever-growing Galaxy family of smartphones is the Galaxy Core Prime (SM-G360) that has just gone on sale in the Indian market via online retailers eBay and Amazon.
The Galaxy Core Prime is an entry-level smartphone offering from Samsung and comes with the kind of hardware specs you would expect from a smartphone in this range. You get a 4.5-inch WVGA 800 x 480 PLS LCD display, quad-core 1.2GHz processor (exact model unknown at this stage), 1GB RAM, 5MP rear camera with LED flash, 2MP front-facing camera, 8GB internal storage with a microSD card slot for memory expansion, 2000mAh battery, Dual-SIM support, and runs on Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI layer on top. Currently the device seems to be available only in the White color option, but more colors could become available in the future. The smartphone has been priced between $150 and $160 on eBay and Amazon India respectively. That might seem low but isn’t quite very competitive. The 2nd Gen Moto G is available for just a little more, while the Moto E and the Xiaomi Redmi 1s are available for much less. One of the main reasons behind Samsung’s declining market share and revenue from the smartphone business has been the onslaught of Chinese Android OEMs that offer smartphones with superior specifications at a much lower price. But if Samsung continues to sell their Galaxy smartphones at a premium like this, it doesn’t seem like they will be able to stop their steady downfall in the near future.
Availability info on other regions isn’t yet available, although we did see another variant of the smartphone – SM-G360P get approved by the FCC recently, so the device could make its way to the US and other markets as well in the coming weeks. The US model is expected to come with 4G LTE support, unlike the one launched in India that only has 3G connectivity.
