iOS 8 already installed on nearly half of all iOS devices

iOS 8’s initial adoption numbers may have been a little sluggish, according to reports, but Apple now says on its developer support pages that 46% of active iOS devices have been updated to its latest mobile operating system, “as measured by the App Store on September 21, 2014.”

Apple has sold more than 800 million iOS devices to date, including iPhones, iPads and iPod touches, according to its June statement. Furthermore, U2’s Bono has recently revealed that Apple may already have 885 million iTunes accounts on hand at the moment.

While Apple has yet to confirm Bono’s number, and while not every single iTunes account is necessarily linked to an iOS device, that 46% iOS 8 adoption number might amount to as many as 400 million devices currently running iOS 8, less than a week after the OS was released when taking into account only Apple’s official iOS device sales numbers. There’s a big caveat though, as Apple is only counting those devices that have connected to the App Store so far, without actually mentioning any other numbers than a percentage.

Of the iOS devices already running iOS 8, more than 10 million are iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units that have sold during Apple’s iPhone 6 launch weekend, that much is certain. As AppleInsider points out, while Apple’s iOS 8 adoption numbers look good, they’re still trailing the pace set by iOS 7. Last year’s iOS version was installed on 52% of devices one week after launch.

iOS 7 is still present on 49% of devices, according to the same pie chart on Apple’s website, while older iOS versions are installed on 5% of devices.

Since installing iOS 8, some users have already complained about Wi-Fi and battery drain issues affecting their devices after the software upgrade. While official fixes are yet to be rolled out, users unhappy with iOS 8 can still roll back to iOS 7.1.2 for a limited time.
