Moto G Google Play Edition Now Receiving Android 5.0.1 Lollipop Update
Last week, we told you that Android 5.0.1 is being rolled out for Nexus 7, Nexus 9, and Nexus 10, then starting yesterday the new firmware arrived on the likes of Nexus 4 and Nexus 6. Now we hear that the Moto G Google Play Edition is getting updated to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop.
Moto G GPE is the first device outside the Nexus family to get updated with the latest available Android firmware. Therefore, if you happen to own the Google Play Edition of the Moto G you should keep an eye on the notifications panel.
As you may know already, Moto G GPE was running Android 4.4.4, so it will skip Android 5.0 and get upgraded straight to 5.0.1. The new firmware has build number LRX21Z which is to be a bit older than the LRX22C build that was recently made available for Nexus 4 and Nexus 6. It’s also worth noting that the update file weighs in at around 380 MB, that’s why we are recommending you to use a WiFi network while downloading it.
Once your Moto G GPE becomes eligible to receive the new software update, you should be able to see a software update message in the notifications panel. All you need to do is tap on it, choose ‘Download now’, wait until the download is completed, then select ‘Install now’. Your smartphone should reboot and install the latest firmware. In case the system update notification failed to appear, you would also want to perform a manual check under Settings > About phone > Software updates > Check now.
You also have the option to manually force the update to your device using the Moto G Android 5.0.1 OTA ZIP. You can download the OTA ZIP from here then use ‘adb sideload’ to flash it to your terminal.
